Elliptical Hits of the 4805 Total Body Trainer

  • Price – This trainer is the most basic TBT and typically costs less than other ST Fitness ellipticals.
  • Good strides – The 18” stride is recommended for many users.
  • Heavy drives – ST Fitness ellipticals have above-average drives for their price range.
  • Heart rate system – Pulse is taken through contact heart rate sensors.
  • Extras – The unit includes a water bottle holder and transport wheels.

  • Good warranty – The warranty for US residential customers is 50 years on the frame, 5 years on mechanical and electronic parts, and a year of labor.

Elliptical Misses

  • Wide pedal spacing – These machines have 3.5” pedal spacing. Physical trainers generally recommend that women, because of their hip shape, use machines with less space between pedals for the best ergonomics.
  • Few programs – The heart rate programs are useful, but this machine is still low on programming. There are 16 resistance levels.
  • Not quiet – This machine is not especially quiet. Be prepared to turn up the TV!
  • Lightweight – The machine’s light weight (139 pounds) could be a plus if

you’re lightweight yourself; it will be easy to move but will be a stable exercise machine. On the other hand, it’s likely to wobble when used by heavier people. The manufacturer lists the weight capacity at 300, which seems generous.

Overall Rating for the ST Fitness 4805 Elliptical

ST Fitness TBTs are solid made-in-the-USA machines. The 4805 loses out to other brands in a number of small ways that add up: it has a wider space between pedals, it has a higher step-on height, it’s not as quiet, etc. Since the 4805 TBT doesn’t have any standout features, it’s not a recommended purchase unless it’s bought on sale. The 4815, which costs about the same, provides a smoother workout (thanks to chrome rails) and has a wireless heart rate monitor. A more expensive model is the 4870, which includes entertainment on a 7” color screen.
