Smooth E4250 Vertical Trainer
Uniquely designed, the Smooth E4250 Vertical Trainer combines the thigh-challenging climb of a stair stepper with the long glide of an elliptical trainer. Excellent engineering makes both motions very low impact on trainees’ joints. Though the Smooth E4250 is more machine than most of us really need, it’s a lovely luxury for those who can afford it. The MSRP is about $2300 and includes an excellent warranty.
Because of its long stride, this high-capacity trainer is sized best for people of average and above-average heights. If you’d like a crosstrainer with a shorter or adjustable stride, we recommend getting the Smooth Agile DMT instead. It has the same selling price and its elliptical footpath adjusts from 19” to 24”.

- 21″ Fixed Stride
- Cushioned Orthopedic Pedals
- 21 Preset Programs
- 16 Resistance Levels
- Wireless Heart Rate Control
- Heart Rate Control Workouts
- Electromagnetic Braking
- SmoothSound Audio for MP3s

The 21 workout programs include 12 presets, four heart rate control programs, manual mode, constant watt mode, a custom program, random mode and pulse recovery.
An additional feature is the MySmooth Virtual Fitness Trainer. This is an online service designed to help trainees get fit quickly. Trainees can use the vertical trainer’s flash drive to put exercise data online, track progress with charts and get customized workouts.
Comments about the E4250 Vertical Trainer
Customers who have used lesser elliptical trainers comment on the Smooth E4250’s electromagnetic braking system. It’s truly quiet and makes remarkably smooth transitions even during fast-paced workouts with dramatic changes in incline.
Besides that, features ranging from the comfortable pedals to the engaging heart rate control workouts are mentioned in product reviews. Customers are also pleased with their warranties although they’ve rarely needed to use them.
Our Overall Review of the E4250 Vertical Trainer
The Smooth E4250 Vertical Elliptical Trainer is ideal for taller trainees who want a good challenge. The dual motion, generous programming and wireless heart rate monitoring are just some of its above-average features.
Considering the $2300 price tag though, those of us in the so-called 99% will want to shop around. First, keep in mind that this model is often sold for less than the MSRP online and with delivery included. Also, you might find it worthwhile to investigate reconditioned commercial elliptical trainers. For about the same cost you’ll get a basically factory-fresh model from Precor or Octane that’s even more durable and has greater resistance than the Smooth Vertical Trainer.
