FreeMotion Fitness currently features two high-end elliptical trainers: the FreeMotion Elliptical Trainer Basic and the FreeMotion Elliptical Trainer with WorkoutTV. These are excellent for commercial use, but they’re typically pricey; the manufacturer’s web price for the Basic trainer is $4829 and the WorkoutTV version normally sells for $5829. Attractive features of FreeMotion ellipticals include great ergonomics, durability, and optional audiovisual entertainment.

Elliptical Hits: Nice Features of FreeMotion Elliptical Trainers

    • Excellent stride – The Basic and WorkoutTV Ellipticals have long 22” strides to accommodate taller athletes.  The pedals are oversized and have traction for varied foot positioning.

    • Upper body exercise – Movable handlebars help users define the arms, shoulders, back, and torso.

    • Preset programs – These machines include manual mode plus the programs that are typically found on commercial ellipticals: cardio, pulse, random, interval, foothills, peaks, and all-terrain. These can be used with wireless telemetry for optimized workouts.

    • Good resistance – Both the FreeMotion Elliptical Trainer Basic and the FreeMotion Elliptical Trainer with WorkoutTV have 20 levels of resistance. Resistance is easily adjusted through a QuickTouch console button.

  • Heart rate monitors – FreeMotion ellipticals have contact sensors on the handlebars and Polar® compatible wireless telemetry.
    • WorkoutTV – The color LED is compatible with Cardio Theater and BroadcastVision. It can also show cable TV with the addition of a coaxial cable.

  • Green energy – Fitness clubs can save on energy by using the FreeMotion Elliptical Basic. It’s powered entirely by users’ energy. The Elliptical Trainer with Workout TV requires a power cable.

Elliptical Misses: Why to Think Twice

  • Warranties – FreeMotion’s commercial ellipticals include a lifetime frame warranty, 2 years of parts coverage, and a year of labor. This seems skimpy considering the cost of these machines and the possibility of the electronics on the workout TV becoming faulty with frequent use.

Overall Rating for FreeMotion Elliptical Trainers

FreeMotion’s Basic Elliptical and Elliptical with WorkoutTV have all the requirements for great low-impact exercise: a long stride, a smooth ride, and varied preset programs with good resistance. These elliptical trainers will please club members — but barring a sale on FreeMotion ellipticals, buyers can get a better deal from other brands. The E9 ElliptiMill by Landice, for instance, has an adjustable stride and a five-year commercial warranty.
